280 ER Now - The McConnells Ernest and Kathy McConnell

As retired Chelsea residents, the McConnells rely on Brookwood Medical Center for all their health care needs. The McConnells have been north Shelby County residents for over 20 years. Through the years, Brookwood Medical Center has been their hospital of choice. At this stage in their lives, the McConnells value access to a true emergency department more than ever. That’s why they support Brookwood’s proposed ER on Highway 280/119.

"We've used the doctors at Brookwood for many, many years. Having a 24/7, full service ER out here, not just a doc-in-the-box, would give me a sense of security and peace of mind. Having an ER so much closer to us would be awesome. Just awesome."

280 ER Now - The Daniel Family The Daniel family

This Altadena Woods family has two sons in football at Spain Park High School. Their sons give 110% in each and every game. Angelia and Al know that with their sons' dedication to sports comes an increased risk for injury. A Brookwood emergency department nearby is something this family cheers for.

"When we're watching Alton running the ball, I mean, hey, it feels good. That's our boy, you know. You never know when that moment could happen, you know, when he might get hurt. If anything happened to my boy and emergency services were too far away, I would be devastated."

280 ER Now - Dee Bobba Dee Bobba

As an RN at Brookwood for over 17 years, Dee has seen the positive effect Brookwood has had for north Shelby County communities. She exemplifies the level of care and experience we hope to bring to the 280 corridor with our proposed emergency department.

"I'm the first medical professional to see the patient and I determine in what order they are seen by our physicians and nursing staff. Many conditions are affected by the timeliness of the care that the patients receive in the emergency room. It would benefit anyone to be closer to care and to be able to be seen in a more timely manner."

280 ER Now - Dr. Kraig Johnson Dr. Kraig Johnson

No one appreciates what an ER can do for a community better than those who work there. As a Brookwood ER physician for 25 years, Dr. Johnson knows how vital the role of a local ER can be. Living near the proposed ER, he looks forward to seeing that opportunity come to fruition.

"When a person is stuck on 280, whether they are in a car or in an ambulance, there are things that cannot be started, treatments that cannot be begun, diagnostics that cannot be done. Every minute, every second counts. And having a facility they could get full service emergency care thirty to forty minutes earlier is an amazing opportunity to further the medical treatment for the people in those surrounding areas."

280 ER Now - Chris and Shahn Chris Powell & Shahn Washington

Chris and Shahn are paramedics that service part of the 280 corridor. They know firsthand how congested that area can be and how just a few seconds can sometimes mean a difference between life and death. For them, a new emergency trauma center on 280 would make their job of saving lives that much easier.

"Time makes a big difference when saving a life. If something happens and they go downhill quick, I need to take them somewhere close. It's 20-25 minutes down 280 to Brookwood, on a good day. If I had somewhere closer on 280, it would be 1-2 minutes. And that could be the difference that saves a life."
